Universal has decided to move back the U.S. release of Matt Damon’s “The Great Wall” three months to 2017.
“The Great Wall,” originally slated to hit theaters on the pre-Thanksgiving slot of Nov. 23, will now be released on Feb. 17, 2017.
Legendary Entertainment produced “The Great Wall,” which also stars Pedro Pascal and Willem Dafoe alongside Chinese stars including Andy Lau, Zhang Hanyu and Eddie Peng. Legendary describes the story as “an elite force making a last stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure.”
The China release, handled by Le Vision Pictures and China Film, is set for the lucrative December holiday season. The project is directed by “House of Flying Daggers” helmer Zhang Yimou and is the largest film ever shot in China.
“The Great Wall” is the first movie to emerge from Legendary Entertainment’s Legendary East operation. It’s the first English-language film for Zhang Yimou, with a budget pegged at $135 million.
Universal did not disclose the reason for the date switch, which comes a month after China’s Dalian Wanda announced its acquisition of Legendary Entertainment for $3.5 billion.
Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is set for Nov. 18, while the Nov. 23 slot is occupied by Disney’s animated “Moana,” Paramount’s Brad Pitt-Marion Cotillard untitled thriller and Broad Green’s “Bad Santa 2.”
The Feb. 17, 2017, slot is already occupied by Sony’s “Bad Boys 3” and Fox’s “Maze Runner: The Death Cure.”

Matt Damon attended a Press Conference for The Great Wall earlier this morning in Beijing, China. He’s sporting a brand new man bun! Probably for the film.
The Great Wall is set to be released in November 2016 and since it’s a story about the Great Wall of China, I expect it’ll be filmed there.

The cast of the upcoming action flick The Great Wall is shaping up rather nicely, and although it sounds like a historical drama, the film is anything but. Matt Damon has joined the cast alongside Willem Dafoe, Pedro Pascal and a roster of notable Chinese stars in the film from acclaimed director Zhang Yimou and Legendary Pictures, the folks who brought you Godzilla.
According to Variety, Damon is the latest to join the cast of the upcoming film, which also stars Willem Dafoe and Game of Thrones favorite Pedro Pascal. The Great Wall is being helmed by Zhang Yimou, known for his previous films The House of Flying Daggers and The Flowers of War. The trio of English-speaking stars are joined by Chinese actors Andy Lau, Jing Tian, Zhang Hanyu, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Lin Gengxin, Zheng Kai, Chen Xuedong, Huang Xuan and Wang Junkai.
Henry Cavill and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter star Benjamin Walker were previously in talks to join the film back when The Last Samurai director Ed Zwick was attached.
The film is set in 15th century China and centers on a group of soldiers who stumble upon the famous Great Wall during its construction. It’s not long before the soldiers learn that the wall isn’t just being built to protect the Chinese from invading Mongol warriors, but to protect them from a far more dangerous threat: ancient monsters.
Max Brooks (World War Z) wrote the script for the upcoming film, which is being touted as the biggest production to ever shoot entirely in China. The Great Wall will hit theaters sometime in 2016.
